Leading Music Community Continues to Grow with Expansion into Indie
Music Genre
LOS ANGELES, April 4, 2008 -- Buzznet, the leading social
music community (http://www.buzznet.com) today announced that it has
completed the acquisition of the acclaimed music blog Stereogum
(http://www.stereogum.com). Already the top destination for pop-punk and
alternative rock fans and artists, the deal complements Buzznet's further
expansion into additional music genres and represents its ongoing
commitment to deliver the best music commentary and an unparalleled social
music experience.
"Stereogum is the most respected voice on the web covering music and is
well regarded by consumers, artists and advertisers," said Scott Boyd,
Buzznet's General Manager. "This acquisition is a perfect fit for us and a
natural next step in our strategy as we expand our music coverage. Our
understanding of the music experience fans want has made our communities
the most popular on the web, and we are excited to add such an influential
voice to the Buzznet family."
"We have great respect for the ways in which Buzznet is revolutionizing
the online music experience and we knew we had to be a part of this
pioneering media company," said Stereogum founder Scott Lapatine. "Buzznet
has a world class social platform and we have already taken advantage of
their vast resources to build a great new look for the blog, as well as
launch an entirely new community. Moving forward, Buzznet will be
instrumental in creating new features and functionality that will take
Stereogum to a whole new level while allowing us to maintain our unique
voice and independence."
Stereogum will launch Videogum (http://www.videogum.com), a new
entertainment blog on Tuesday, April 8. Built together with Buzznet,
Videogum will focus on what's happening in the world of pop culture
programming, including television, movies, web shorts and video games. For
the new venture, Lapatine has brought on two talented co- senior editors --
Lindsay Robertson, formerly of ComedyCentral.com, and Gabe Delahaye, who
has written for Gawker and 23/6.
Lapatine founded Stereogum in 2003 and will continue to oversee the
blog, which is known for its authoritative voice, music discovery and audio
and video exclusives. The site was recently honored with the Music Blog of
the Year Award at the 2008 Plug Awards and has been widely credited as a
tastemaker in the music community.
